The World is Encouraged to Become the Extra Haim Sisters Member.

"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just one problem: The author likewise wants to be Haim's fourth member. And we're not alone. Multiple famous supporters have also petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos often show them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The band have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international following.

But Haim will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
