Disappointing Oracle Earnings Report Erase More Than $70 Billion From Valuation, Stoking Artificial Intelligence Hype Concerns.

The tech firm's underwhelming latest earnings have slashed over $70bn from the value of the software and data company co-founded by billionaire Larry Ellison, adding to growing concerns of a hype cycle in artificial intelligence stocks.

Sharp Stock Fall Comes After Sales Shortfall

Stock in the company plunged by over 11 percent following the announcement after it reported a disappointing 14% growth in sales to $16bn in the most recent quarter, while simultaneously announced plans to ramp up its AI spending by about $15bn.

The enterprise recorded softer-than-forecast three-month sales for the period ending in November, with revenue growth at its key cloud computing division growing at a more modest rate than forecast, at 34 percent.

Market Concerns Over Investment and Debt

Investors were further let down by a more moderate sixty-eight percent growth in income from its infrastructure business.

At the same time, the market were spooked by the firm's elevated forecasts for spending on artificial intelligence. It now projects capex to leap by forty percent to $50 billion, with the lion's share of the additional spending aimed at constructing cloud infrastructure.

This aggressive spending plan comes amid a growing debt load, with Oracle's long-term debt having increased by 25 percent over the past year to reach $99.9 billion.

"Honestly, the report was not dramatically bad, but it served to confirm worries around heavy AI spending, financed by debt, with an uncertain timeframe for revenue generation," noted a market analyst.

Broader Sector Implications and Industry Concerns

Sustained excitement about the promise of AI technology has led to a surge in market capitalizations in recent months, but there has been a increasing chorus of warnings from regulators and business leaders who say stock market valuations could plummet if the market become let down by the progress or commercial uptake of AI technology.

While Oracle has become an important technology provider creating enterprise solutions for major corporations worldwide and has more recently grown rapidly in the cloud sector, analysts point to increasing questions about how dependent firms are becoming on mutual investment within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle disclosed that its measure of remaining performance obligations rose by 440 percent over the last twelve months. However, analysts were skeptical when it was revealed that these contracts were propelled by new commitments from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are high-quality customers, it will not placate fears that the tech sector's AI investments are interdependent, which makes the sector susceptible to a loss of market faith," stated a market strategist.

"In summary, robust contract growth was not enough to calm anxiety about AI and the massive amount of capital expenditure needed by companies to construct AI infrastructure."

Ripple Effect in AI-Related Shares

Other technology stocks subsequently declined in after-hours trading following the Oracle results. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price dropped by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares declined by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares tumbled by 7.7% on Thursday.
