British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
